Sadly our government is for sale to the highest bidder, so tax rates will always fall more heavily on those without large sums of money to dispense as bribes. Economic demand in our economy has been greatly diminished by the fact that income and wealth has become very concentrated. In the Middle Ages, city-states always experienced a surge in prosperity after invaders had successfully breached the cities walls, redistributing the coinage among a greater percentage of the population.
