Thank you TJ, I got it more or less. From my understanding is that there are several dialects spoke in China and this is obvious in such a big country.

Still I do not understand why the big commotion about languages, it seems to me that it is more about swats of China own local identity than anything else - like N. Ireland and UK or Scots and Welsh of UK or similar situation in Spain and many other countries.

My understanding is that Mandarin is mainly spoken in the north v. Cantonese in the south of China which reminds me of Hoch Deutsch of Berlin and Schwab in Bavaria.
