In older systems of classification wolves are Canis lupus and dogs are Canus familiaris. I see that some now classify both as subspecies of Canis lupus (Canis lupus lupus, and Canis lupus familiaris). I tend to side with the cladists on these matters since their results can be checked via DNA. I think current DNA studies show that domestic dogs have both wolves and coyotes as ancestors along with a long period of domestication which applied different selections.
