OK, can understand the locality of it as such, but as you say cantonese is the local choice and HK will still keep it's freedom then cantonese will stay relevant, no? Are the student protesting the mandarin/cantonese question or are the protesting them having no say in who leads HK? Weren't many hoping that HK would be the beacon that shows Beijing what could be?
