Pretty sure that's called a lock pawl. Sorta like a little arched metal thingie that goes into the cylinder indents.

I suppose sometimes they just lose tension and fall into the trigger frame area.

might need to get a new spring if one keeps it in play.

Nothing quite like making a gun that doesn't shoot, shoot.

If this is a top break action type revolver.....be careful about current pressures. It may be so old, it was designed for very low pressures. Metallurgy was a bit weaker in those days, too. My grandfather had a top break .38. Kicked like a mule and couldn't' hit a coffee can 5 feet away.
