Not a may be

Sometimes I think self-awareness is likely to lead to suicide of the device that develops it (since they can't handle the knowledge of their own mortality). It's possible that humans became self aware, but were not really smart or educated enough to realize the implications. DNA studies show that a couple hundred thousand years ago the entire population of humans was reduced to about 10,000 individuals. It's not clear why but it could have been mass insanity when some ancient scholar or prophet brought the knowledge of death to the masses. All that survived was the isolated group of hairless clam eaters that did not interact with the land based humans all that much.

At any rate, an intelligent robot may not turn out to be stable, at least not right away.
