Was the war really about forcing conversion?

Yes, this was the culmination of the wars started by Charlmange to re-establish the western roman empire. An important part was to mimic the Christian religion of the Eastern Roman empire, however they ended up at odds with each other anyway. The battle against the vikings was the last great european battles of christain conquest in europe. Once it was over the pope had to do something with the viscious knights and so started the crusades.
