They all had an effect on events and chaos shows that any one of them would have been necessary for history to unfold the way it did. Alexander the Great lead to the Hellenization of the middle east, which in turn led to the Roman Empire. Meanwhile events in the east, probably the rise of Han Chinese, led to much of the Central Asian population, including that which became vikings, to migrate to Europe displacing the existing population. Muslims put pressure on south Europe. Charlemagne was a reaction to both of these movements using the banner of the Western Roman Empire to rally troops. In the course of a couple centuries the christains attacked first north, then south.
