Why should an ape evolve the brains to learn trig and calculus? ....For one, there are two main branches of apes, the gibbons or lessor apes; & the hominids which are the great apes. Try & have a care when you act like a chimp tossing around terms.

A mixture of emergent curiosity, the brain is a pattern seeking organ, increasing storage capacity for memory & image recognition. The slow beginning of longer migrations subject to different environments that gradually add to the problem solving mechanisms & increased tool making skill sets.

The great apes are tool makers & tool users, we have observed this.
