I cherish a story about my oldest friend, whom I've know since before either of us can remember. He was a child, barely able to talk. His father came home from the war having seen action in three amphibious landings, including Peleliu and Okinawa. Of course, he was a Marine, a gunnery sergeant.

When it was time, his mother wanted to put him in his bed.

Bill refused. He said, "I'm not going to bed until that man goes home!"

I told that story at his father's funeral. His father was Bud Moore.
