About 10-12 years ago a cousin, who handles cruises, arranged for about 8 family members to take a Mississippi cruise. Because of high water late in June, the trip was changed at the last minute to go south from St. Louis, instead of north. We cruised down the Miss then turned up the Ohio River. It was nothing short of beautiful, for the entire week long trip. Of course, all of the scenery was new to most of us. Unlike your familiarity with the Columbia.
When I was still working I had a business trip take me to Portland. I took my wife with me and after business, we rented a car. We drove across the Columbia, into Washington, then along the river to the coast. There we took a ferry back across and drove along the river back to Portland. Beautiful country. My father grew up in that country and always had fond memories, so I was glad to get to see it, if only that once.
