Not one of the items CBO identified as causing unsustainable deficits can be "turned off" when times are good. The deficits will continue until the inevitable collapse. Even in good times we cannot raise enough revenue to pay those bills. The deficits are systemic and the only way to get rid of them is to fix these broken liberal social programs, which is not even on the RADAR screen (GWB tried to fix SS, and his own party wouldn't even support him).

It makes a mockery of what Keynes' position was; the theoretical pondering was fine, but there is no basis in reality. Our government is not capable of making the kinds of cuts that would be needed for the next 50 years.

The problem is political: Republicans can see the problem, but can't do anything about it because Democrats cannot see it (they generally lack the analytical skills) and thus will demagogue it to death.

It is, at this point in time, a problem that cannot be solved.
