It is hard to believe that such a big company that made such a big announcement would produce a product that is not viable. What are the problems with it? Is Lucent deluding themselves? I think the "sleeper" product of 1998 will be the hard drive test/inspection systems. We could see immediate results hitting the bottom line throughout 1998. The disk drive products are now mature. Britelight/Light Knife/XRL Point Source are still unique and formative, and we should be grateful if these technologies break even in 1998 (but produce huge incomes in 1999 and beyond).
