It is a win/win marketing wise.

Apple is putting on a clinic for how to roll out a new product. They've set it up such that all of their banking and card network partners are competing to promote their association with Apple Pay, and no one has any incentive to disparage Apple in the slightest. iPhone 6 is getting tons of free publicity without Apple needing to spend a dime.

I'd like to see retailers competing for mindshare as well. Other than some in-store signage at Whole Foods, I haven't seen it. Maybe they think customers won't make purchasing decisions based around availability of Apple Pay; if so, they need only take a peek at my credit card bill the last 2 days :)
