re cable modems vs. shotgun In my area, suburban Pittsburgh PA, the Information Super-Highway is somewhat better than a rabbit trail perhaps the equivilent of a gravel road. Bell Atlantic prices ISDN (It Still Does Nothing - I like that!) abusively, and bellatlantic.net provides a local call POP but spotty service. Adelphia advertises "Powerlink" agressively but for 2 to 6 months said it would be available in 2 to 6 months - now it won't even hazard a guess as to actual availability. Customer service refers you to their web site which of couse contains zero useful information. And even if/when Adelphia truly offers Powerlink, I'm not sure I want it from them. Their customer support philosophy is "the customer is always wrong". And they want to send a technician out to spend HOURS installing their modem in my PC? I doubt Adelphia could find it's butt with both hands, I shudder to think of them trying to find a free IRC from BIOS don't even mention W95 Plug'n Play. If you tell customer support that the satellite tier tv channelset has stopped working and that the problem is definitely at their head-end, they send a snorkel truck to your house. If you are the first on your street to report cable out, they treat you like an idiot (is your tv plugged in?) until you have a neighbor call to confirm your problem report. Then there is the question as to whether Adelphia could successfully manage a growing network. Which brings in the poor balance sheet. The point is, I am seriously considering going with shotgun as soon as available even IF Adelphia actually rolls out their cable modem. A local ISP has a good technical rep, I'll probably switch to them when they offer shotgun. I would PREFER a cable modem ... but from the local ISP - but that is not an option. Here's to more bandwidth, sooner!
