Peter-

True-believer syndrome is one of my lifelong interests and one of the personal filters through which I read all internet message boards. Hoffer’s 1951 classic about the psychological roots of fanatical groups and Keene’s 1976 book about psychics and other pseudo-scientific nonsense are still good reads. Both considered the syndrome a type of cognitive disorder, and it’s prominently on display on many small biotech message boards.

Some easily recognized symptoms/behaviors:

1. Belief in something even if there's overwhelming evidence that it’s false.

2. Belief that they're in a special group who is in sole possession of the Truth.

3. Hostility, aggression, anger if this Truth is questioned.

3. The rest of the world, the Others, are in a conspiracy against them.

4. If you deny the existence of this conspiracy, you're part of it.

There's a great quote from Jefferson: "It is as useless to argue with those who have renounced the use of reason as to administer medication to the dead." :-)
