Matt. 24:24 says "...so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect." I believe the ones who have a thorough knowledge of God's Word and are tuned in to the Holy Spirit to be lead by Him will see the truth and avoid the deception. Other "elect" who are not watching will possibly be mislead temporarily and suffer for it. The appearance of the return of Jesus is clearly described.
A friend of mine visited the UN and took the tour. He said he could feel the spirit of the place and that it was strong. They have a religion room (a sort of temple) where there is a sort of alter to the world religions with strange symbols etc. They want to mold every religion into one.

God will seperate the wheat from the chaff and the mark of the beast may be the process for that. God always gives us the choice.
