Excel Expands North American Sales Organization

Company Increases Sales and Technical Support in Field Offices

HYANNIS, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 16, 1997--Excel Switching Corporation (''Excel'') recently expanded its
regional facilities with the addition of Pacific Southwest and Midwest offices. In conjunction with the expansion its sales force,
Excel has completed the first phase of a plan to move engineering support closer to its customers. The addition of systems
engineering personnel in key regional field offices is intended to provide customers with higher levels of development and
technical support and faster on-site assistance.

''The addition of these offices is a continuation of Excel's strategy to regionalize the sales and support operation of the
company,'' said Robert Madonna, president of Excel. Mr. Madonna said, ''Excel continues to experience significant growth of
our customer and strategic partner base in the midwest and west coast regions. The presence of these offices and the support
they will provide should benefit these customers, as well as Excel.''

Curt McPherson recently joined Excel in the role of Senior Account Manager for the Pacific Southwest regional office in San
Diego. Mr. McPherson comes to Excel after many years at AT&T Bell Laboratories, beginning in their development lab and
moving through customer support, project management and sales. Mr. McPherson will report to Deb York, Western Region
Sales Manager. Excel's Pacific Southwest office will cover customers in Southern California, Utah, Nevada, and Arizona.

Brett Flenniken has also been added to Excel's sales team as Senior Account Manager for the Midwest regional office in
Cleveland. Mr. Flenniken has extensive experience in the telecommunications industry, most recently with Allen Telecom
where he held management positions in both Sales and Product Marketing. Previous to that he was with Bell Atlantic as
Network Planner. The Midwest office will support customers in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin,
Minnesota, Kentucky, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska.

Doti Garland has joined Excel's Southwest Region as Account Manager in the Dallas office. Ms. Garland was previously with
GTE, holding management positions in the Telephone Operations-Carrier Markets division and in the Wireless division.

In their new positions at Excel, Mr. Flenniken and Ms. Garland will report to Craig Colin, Central Region Sales Manager.

''The addition of Curt, Brett, and Doti means we now have an even stronger organization with which to serve the increased
demand for our products from new and existing customers,'' said Bob Ross, Vice President of Sales for Excel. ''Their years of
experience with both wireless and wireline companies will be instrumental in enabling us to identify new business opportunities
in their regions for Excel and our customers.''

In addition to the continued growth of its sales force, the company is bringing engineering support closer to its customers by
moving systems engineering personnel into its field offices. Kevin Harrison will support customers in the Western Region from
the San Diego office, Franz Gletscher and Tom Fritz will support customers in the Central Region from the Dallas and Chicago
offices respectively, and Tom Phillips will support the Eastern Region from the company's headquarters in Hyannis.
