Anyone,
Some common sense on speed issue.
Speed only matters in computationally high projects. Spell checking doesn't really fall into this catagory. Video compositing, 3D, trajectories, etc. do. (Does anyone know how Macs and PC's fare in database searches?) No one needs a 300 MGZ machine to work process.
So if you use your computer only to type and access the net, buy a cheepie. If you do Photoshop shop around.
On another note. I just finished a quarter at UCLA using Softimage (a high quality, $9000, 3D application, owned and donated by Microsoft). We use duel processor 200 MGZ (128 or 256 ram) Pentium Intergraph machines, generously donated by Intergraph.
Although Softimage creates superior photorealistic animation, the interface is sometimes incomprehensible. Files were frequently corrupted leading to long searches to replace the offender. I usually rebooted 6-8 times per day, and crashed 3 times per day.
Rendering time was roughly equivilent to my Mac 8500 150 (604) with 112 ram running Electric Image, perhaps 15% faster.
