The man arrived back in the United States on Friday after traveling to Liberia, WCNC-TV in Charlotte reported. He developed a fever Sunday morning at a family home in Person County and was taken to Duke University Hospital in Durham, WCNC said. Testing conducted at the State Laboratory of Public Health returned a preliminary negative result for Ebola.. Additional testing will occur 72 hours after his fever first developed to confirm this result. Until the results of additional testing are known, the patient will remain in the contained, isolated and secured unit at Duke in which care has been delivered since admission Sunday night, according to state health officials. Health officials said that staff caring for the man will have no other patient contact during this time. The patient continues to be treated and is also being evaluated for other conditions. While health officials say the risk to the public is "extremely low," they are also monitoring the man's family and reaching out to people who might have come into contact with the man as he rode a commercial bus from Newark to Person County. Officials say they do not believe that any of the passengers are at risk, but are being proactive. The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services and the Durham and Person County Health Departments were monitoring the case. The DHHS says the person didn't have any known exposure to Ebola while in Liberia and other than the fever they haven't experienced any other symptoms. Forbes reported that the traveler flew into Newark Liberty International Airport and traveled to the Durham, N.C., region by bus.
