| | | From "I hate Internet Trolls"
They are ******** with no lives and nothing better to do than sit online and bully and annoy. God our generation is failing.
What's The Point Trolls are nothing more or less than school yard bullies. Or maybe I am wrong. Maybe they are both more and less than the school yard bullies. They don't even have the courage to face their victims in a face to face exchange. Because after all, in the real world, the bullied person may land a lucky punch or two.
I think that bullying should not be tolerated from anyone, anywhere, anytime. It is maybe one of the worst things I can think of. Words are extremely harmful. Yes, they can hurt a whole lot more than stick or stones. The wounds from sticks and stones can heal, but the words just keep coming back like a boil that never heals. Spreading poison and causing pain. I am new to the world of computers and social networking sites. And I haven't yet understood the pleasure that the trolls get from causing pain. Is it a painful childhood? Are they damaged people? Sociopaths? Narcissists? (Science has now confirmed they are all that and more--Solon) How can anyone enjoy causing people emotional pain? Especially young people; or people who are already suffering painful, debilitating emotional disorders!! I am at a loss for the solution. I don't think banning one or two trolls, will work. For each one you ban, there will be ten who jump in to take that one's place. The ones who are just borderline, will step over that line in solidarity with the full blown trolls. And the troll population will grow, exponentially. There have been bullies in the world since time began. My strategy, has been to block the trolls, when I read the first nasty post by them, before they become aware of me and begin picking on me. I choose to stay away from debates on sensitive subjects. I feel that whichever side I would take in any debate, I would be disrespecting the opinions of the ones on the other side of it. I believe in respecting everyone opinions. And I get physically ill when I read or hear someone telling anyone that their OPINION is WRONG. People can have some misinformation and therefore get their facts wrong, but opinions can't be wrong. An opinion is just an opinion, and we are all entitled to voice our opinions. As long as we have put some thought into finding out all we can about the topic on which we are expressing an opinion. Once we have got the facts, we then can express an informed opinion.
Or to put it in the words of a very clever and well informed author, Harlan Ellison;
"Everybody has opinions: I have them, you have them. And we are all told from the moment we open our eyes, that everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. Well, that’s horsepuckey, of course. We are not entitled to.. our opinions; we are entitled to our informed opinions. Without research, without background, without understanding, it’s nothing. It’s just bibble-babble. It’s like a fart in a wind tunnel, folks."
