Duncan went to the hospital for the first time on 9/25. He already had a fever, stomach pain, and was vomiting. He was sent home where he stayed another 3 days. In his condition there is good reason to expect him to be infectious. Yet the family did not succumb. Later two nurses did. All of this together with what we know about the lag in PCR being able to establish infection, and the MoA, suggest that the most infectious period is late in the disease. The longer the disease goes unchecked, the greater the viral shedding. That is a very good thing because we can and will catch cases early and stop the spread of ZEBOV. Our hospitals handle hundreds of thousands of infectious disease cases each year. We can and will handle hundreds of ZEBOV if that becomes necessary.
