Cherry picking right now is not comprehensive, but slowly it will become that way. It will be done by streaming programming from the Internet to your TV or other device via your wireless network. I've been streaming Amazon Prime content for quite a while to my family room's HD TV (via a Sony DVD player with wireless capability) and my Kindle Fire. I also have a Chromecast attached to the TV for streaming other Internet content (like Spotify), and have an Amazon Fire TV Stick on the way so my other HD TV will be "wireless ready."

Streaming is by subscription for the good stuff, although my DVD player gives me a lot of free access to older movies. The major streaming players now are:

- HuluPlus
- Amazon Prime (some content is free with your subscription, some newer stuff you pay for)
- NetFlix

HBO is launching a stand-alone streaming subscription in 2015. CBS announced it as well, and I expect more networks will follow suit shortly.

Good article on it.

washingtonpost.com

"HBO will launch a streaming video service in 2015 that doesn’t require consumers to have a cable or satellite subscription, the company said Wednesday, in a move that could roil the television industry and pave the way for vastly more choices for consumers."
