Then when it blew up in his face, he switched allegiance to Saddam and backed him in an incredibly stupid and costly war with Iran, in which hundreds of thousands died. As a very special favor, the Saddam aid effort included chemical weapons.

Reagan was probably beyond understanding much of anything there in the end, though. And he has legions of conservative propagandists still hard at work to make sure a far different image is all you're allowed to see on the popular front. And what the heck, compared to the tax cuts for rich people / starve the beast conservative dogma he installed, that mostly rules us to this day, his special little Iran/Iraq escapades weren't that bad.
