That is a good chart of Energy use in America, by type and end-user. "Energy Services" is productive use. "Rejected Energy" is the inefficiency, such as waste heat from a computer or unburnt fuel sent down the tailpipe to be burnt by the catalytic converter." Rejected Energy" can never be eliminated, but it can be reduced. The largest inefficiencies are in: 1.) Oil Use, because most transportation engines are too small to be as efficient as a massive power plant (and they don't operate at their constant ideal speed). Diesel-electric train engines are closer to the efficiency of an electrical power plant; 2.) Electrical Transmission which loses a huge percentage of the electricity generated as heat. Transmission losses could theoretically be reduced with superconducting transmission wires. Waste heat from electrical generation is already close to theoretical minimums, using massive turbines operated at optimum speed.
