Here's a new gas-fired power plant that captures some of that heat, for a 25% efficiency improvement over the one it replaced. Those mountains in the background are my playground... Community celebrates Southcentral Power Project (May 9, 2013) chugachelectric.com The new power plant has three gas turbine-generators and one steam turbine-generator that operate in combined-cycle mode to efficiently produce electricity. Hot exhaust from the gas turbines is captured and used to turn water into steam for the steam unit. The new plant produces a kilowatt-hour using only about three-fourths of the natural gas compared to the prior system average for other generation units.
