TOKYO (Nikkei)--Fueled by growing Internet use, Japan's market for online access and information technology equipment continues to expand at a brisk pace, The Nihon Keizai Shimbun said in its Tuesday morning edition.
The number of Internet service providers has doubled over the past calendar year, hitting 2,326 at the end of October, says the inistry of Posts and Telecommunications. The access-provider market is expected to top Y100 billion this fiscal year.
Subscriptions to Open Computer Network, the Internet service of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (NTT or 9432), topped the 100,000 mark at the end of November, including roughly 9,100 corporate customers, the newspaper said.
Demand is growing rapidly for routers, devices used to select transmission paths for Internet communications. Cisco Systems KK, which commands nearly 70% of the local market, forecasts demand of Y110 billion in the year through July, from Y85 billion in the current term. The company is a unit of the U.S.'s Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO).
NEC Corp. (NIPNY or 6701) will boost production capacity for terminal adapters, the equivalent to modems for ISDN circuits, and projects a doubling of sales in the current year to 500,000 units.
