You have too superficial of an idea, either about what a theory is or what evolution is.

EVOLUTION means non-random change over time. It can be observed which is why it is a fact.

NATURAL SELECTION is one of the explanations for why life changes over time the way it does. NATURAL SELECTION is a theory. PUNCTUATED EQUILIBRIUM is a similar but different theory.

When you use the same word for two concepts you lose distinctions. They may not be important when you just want to mention the category in general, but if you want to discuss the subject in any detail you can't just interchange the nouns and maintain clarity.
