Neil, the $50 per unit figure was just a wild number to illustate that a cut in price to the consumer does not necessarily mean a reduced profit per unit.

I can't help on the SDRAM question.I checked my invoice and the manufacturer is not specified. If you really want to know call Dell and I am sure they will tell you.

As far as pricing of Dell and Gateway this gets hard.I just did a quick shot at comparing a Dell Dimension XPS P166s @$2279 and a Gateway P5-166 @2249.(per PC Magazine 10/08/96)

When pricing it is difficult to compare apples to apples and you need to get it the same to find who is cheeper.Monitors, hard drives, memory and sound cards differences need to be accounted for.

In the end I think in this example Dell is still cheeper.Take a look for youself and call Dell to get the same configuration price if you want to persue this further.

Just in time delivery is not a problem as long as the suppliers to Dell understand what is expected of them and manage the pipeline well.
