Todd, Sorry for the delay in response but, I am on the other side of the big pond from you guys and mostly sleep while you guys talk. MaxMedia has a running media facility in San Jose where initial productions are underway. The ultimate intent is for that facility to be the lead on new product development while Malaysia will be the volume producer. They will make both finished media and substrates in Malaysia but I have heard that they will focus on substrates initially. (substrates are the finished blanks prior to deposition of a magnetic and protective layers, and final testing). Here is the pr that I am stunned to discover I still had on the C: drive.
hyundai runs media production operations in malaysia
November 10, 1997
Comline Computer Wire via Individual Inc. -- With $200 million, Hyundai Electronics is building a media plant in the Kulim Hi-Tech Park in Kedah, Malaysia. Media is the core part of HDD. The construction will be completed by early 1999. The company will produce 20 million units of media and 240 million units of media raw materials per year by 2001. All the products will be shipped to Maxtor's HDD production lines in Singapore and Dailian of China. Maxtor is the world's leading HDD maker Hyundai has acquired. With new production operations in Malaysia, Hyundai would have better access to a cheap and well-trained labor pool, boosting its competitive edge in the international HDD market. The company has already increased the HDD sales target of the year 2000 to $5 billion.
