Bob: Provided you are not stuck in a traffic jam that never gets above 10 mph for many hours, in theory you never have to recharge the batteries in a hybrid. That is the big advantage they have over pure electric vehicles. Once the car gets over maybe 20 mph the gas engine kicks in, and in addition to powering the car it also recharges the batteries. You fill up with gasoline now and then, just like a regular car. The mileage is supposedly in the mid to high 60's per gallon.
