I started with a small head of cabbage and cored and sliced it and salted and rubbed the salt in well. Then I tried to get it all in a 1 qt wide mouth bottle - barely got it in. Been mashing it down for the last day and now it is only half-way up the bottle... starting to smell like sauerkraut. Still some green left in it but this too will pass, as they say. Thanks so much for the idea and instructions. I will keep you posted on how it is going. Also, is yours finished now and what have you used it for?

BTW, the brine is up to the top of the shredded cabbage in the bottle. And there is a bit of foam on top.
