A related site I highly recommend is at pbs.org which describes the origins of the Hebrew Bible, probably the the most successful pedagogical project the world has seen.

Also good is pbs.org which describes the change from the ancient Israelite religions to monotheistic Judaism.

An excellent effort by PBS on a fascinating time, place and people.
