it needed both genes to utilize nylon waste.

But what's to say that if it couldn't eat nylon waste it didn't just eat sugar or cellulose or whatever it's recent ancestor bacteria used to eat. I find it unlikely that there is a bacteria that eats nylon waste and nothing else.
