<How will IBM's new technology effect SEG?>
I assume you mean IBM's implementation of Giant MR (GMR) heads recently announced as a key ingredient in their latest 2.5 inch disk drive. In general the industry views GMR as the next head technology in its continuing pursuit of 60% per annum data density growth curve. Interestingly, we have W-D still in the throes of conversion to MR while IBM announces the next big jump. However, IBM has historically been at the leading edge of the technology curve. It just isnt clear that they get any GM or profitability bonus for doing so. To be sure, Seagate is working on GMR heads and will have a product some time in the future that uses them. The transition to GMR from MR is a bit easier then the transition from Thin-film inductive (TFI) recording heads to MR. In a speech given in Las Vegas at the time of the last Comdex, Bob Scranton, VP Development for IBM's storage div. stated that MR infrastructure will support the transition to GMR while the switch from TFI was a much more involved transition. Frankly, this is another reason I like the sector.
