More on the ATM market (where IDX is missing in action):

As you may recall, Diebold is going with a combination of Visionics' FaceIt (facial recognition) system as well as a voice recognition system. According to the December 15 Credit Risk Management Reports, Diebold is primarily using FaceIt, with the voice system "used as a backup and to direct the transaction." In the beginning, Diebold will use a transitional machine that will allow a customer to use a touch screen and a magnetic card instead of the new technology. [I think this also gives Diebold an exit strategy if the new technology is rejected.]

The Diebold consumer will speak a pass phrase into a microphone to confirm the FaceIt identification, and the voice system will also be used for marketing offers (from December 15 EDP Weekly).

Meanwhile, its competitor NCR, not to be outdone, is going with Sensar's iris recognition system, and planning to roll this out in Great Britain in 1998 and the US in 1999. Its present cost is four to five thousand dollars on top of an existing ATM, although the price is expected to drop.
