why did Darwin get so confused about the Galapogos finches.

Darwin did not separate his collected specimens by island when he collected them. It was not until he returned to England and analyzed the data that he began to form the theory of natural selection. Darwin had to borrow specimens from another member of the crew once he began to realize that the variation was important.
