What will the wingers come up with it next?
Why do they need something new? They are still kvetching over ACORN, and it hasn't been around for 4 years. The Senate wants a probe into Benghazi, despite numerous other probes that have come up dry. No doubt Ebola will be dredged up now and again.
Besides, they can always make something up. It is what they do.
I don't know if you've read or watched the book/film series, The Hunger Games but Rs are like the preamble to the fictitious country, Panem, a successor to the US, where all the wealth and power are concentrated in the Capitol of the country and the Capitol is ruled by a despot. As explained by the books, seventy five years earlier, there had been a revolt and when all was said and done, the country was divided into 12 districts and the Capitol. Each year as penance for the revolt, the districts must send two teenagers to play in the Hunger Games where every teen is killed except the victor. There is nothing rational or logical about these games nor the relationship between the Capitol and the districts. There is never any effort to bring the games to an end.......they have become a spectacle for the inhabitants of the Capitol who look forward to the event.......in other words, there is never enough penance paid to erase the memory of the uprising. Each year, the citizens of the districts are reminded of their 'crime'.
In the middle of this mess, there are two phrases that are repeated by the people in charge: May we never forget [the uprising and the devastation it caused] and May luck be ever in your favor [when participating in the hunger games]. Those phrases coupled with the never ending hunger games reminds me of how the Rs operate. How their faux outrage over innocent events hides what they really are doing which is protect their wealthy supporters, constrict and undermine the Constitution and maintain a style of living to which they've grown accustomed. And in a similar way..........the coined phrases, the hunger games and dysfunctional relationship between the Capitol and the districts are all used to mask what's really true...........the rape of the districts which must send their bounty to the Capitol and remain at poverty levels so that the Capitol can enjoy its wealth and luxuries.
The books were written by someone in her 20s and were intended as reading fare for teens much like Harry Potter. However, turning them into film has made them larger and much more political/cautionary, and I can see the current US heading towards the kind of revolution that creates a Panem. There is an ever growing concentration of power and wealth in DC........which is leading to a huge demographic shift in the District; one where the district is going from majority black to minority majority status and where whites are the largest minority. Congress pays less and less attention to the provinces; does little legislation and mainly fights among it members, jockeying for power. The Supreme Ct has been corrupted and mostly caters to the conservatives in this country, and the president either is in league with Congress [like Bush], or is a constant antagonistic position much like Obama.
I believe there has to be an end game to this dysfunction and a revolt is one possibility. The others are as disturbing to contemplate. Not good times |
