European Lawmakers’ Plan to Break Up Google

Members of the European Parliament, backed by German officials, are preparing a draft resolution calling for the breakup of Google. The salvo is a message for new competition commissioner Margrethe Vestager, who took over in October, argues Ioannis Lianos, professor of global competition law at University College London.

The proposal recommends the European Union consider ways to “unbundle” Internet search engines from “other commercial services.” The proposal is aimed at Google, the dominant search engine in Europe, though it doesn’t mention the tech giant by name.

Europe’s Parliament can draft legislation for the continent, though it can’t force a breakup. Vestager is part of the European Commission’s executive arm, which has been investigating Google’s market power – and considering sanctions – for four years.
