"If you want to morally equate a defensive War against an aggressive enemy who has vowed to kill us with what atheists have done in murdering multi millions of their own people, then NO, we do not agree"
That is a straw man. Atheism has never been the cause of a war or of any atrocities--any more than black hair makes someone a sex offender. Atheism is not an ideology. If you want to propose a rational analogy, I will be glad to address it. Atheists are way under represented in the prison population. That is a fact. And that is an important fact.
"there is no compelling reason not to kill anyone who gets in your way (or rape and enslave any woman, child, or man, that suits your fancy, for that matter). That's rational evolution in action."
It may very well be evolution--which is why society has civilized--as rationality and science have become more prevalent over the centuries. Because irrational acts no longer have much of an evolutionary pay-off. People who hurt others and run afoul of moral law are executed, murdered, or locked away in prison. Eventually "rational" genes (as it were) will predominate.
Superstitious people are by definition irrational. Therefore, they have no rational reason for choosing a moral behaviour over an immoral behaviour. If we make the rational assumption that there is a reality and that therefore moral laws can be rationally determined, then it is clear that rational people can choose rational morality rather than a morality based on obedience, fear, or maladjustment.
So what is the rational way for people to live in community? I happen to know. Most atheists do. I am not in prison. Do you know?? Are you in prison?? |
