Well, it isn't hell to get to anymore, but Walmart is an organization that is exceptionally demanding of its vendors. As you found out. But that is why they are so successful.

They're also successful by keeping employee cost below a living wage. And having government, you and me, take up the slack. Is that Libertarian or gaming the system?

When I was very young, the family used to drive across the country every summer, for maybe 30 days, before the Interstates. I was in almost every state by the time I was 10 YO. There were no Walmarts, McDonald's or Holiday Inns. All the businesses were owned by local people, just regular folks. That was, really, a much more Libertarian society. And frankly a much more interesting society. You got something different everywhere you went... Sometimes great sometimes terrible.

And yes, it was much less efficient. I often wonder how much surprise and delight at life we've given up in the name of efficiency.
