Runner, I am not an expert. If you have a loss you can not claim it if you have bought the same stock either 30 days before or after the sale in question. To recover the loss you can purchase the stock in queastion after 31 days. You then subtract from the cost the unrealized loss. You must have a gain to offset the loss.
