NO, it didn't exist in hundred foot strands perhaps, but simple polymers of all types are constructed by plants and animals as well as just chance molecular arrangements. It's not like an airplane just appeared, it's just a simple molecule of common atoms that repeats into long chains. There would have been all sorts of bacteria which chomped on similar molecules and wouldn't have to be selected much at all to start eating these molecules. They wouldn't have much competition so they wouldn't even have to be very efficient eaters (at least at the beginning). Bacteria average about one generation every 30 minutes, so there would have been a lot (I'll let you do the math) of generations since 1935 for them to get efficient.
