How would they know? I have no reason to trust the findings without some idea of what the experiment was?

I'm pretty sure they weren't determining gene sequences in New Zealand in the 1970s.

It sounds to me like whatever trait they were looking for had been in the environment for decades and it just took them a couple of months to capture one in their petri dish. Nothing remarkable there.
