When witness statements disagree with all the physical evidence, you know you have a huge problem. Prosecutors know how unreliable witness testimony is- there are, after all, lots of studies on that, and lots of experts who would love to testify on that. Witnesses, especially in this case, can be obviously biased- and they want a certain outcome. That comes out on the witness stand. And, unfortunately, the witnesses managed to "see" something that clearly didn't happen- when you look at the autopsy results. It also didn't help that one of the witnesses had just robbed a store with Brown.
