My pick would be Wesley Clark. He was the smartest at West Point (graduated at the top of his class) , has a superb track record as NATO commander and Balkans tamer and seems sane.

And don't worry about confirmation. Just stick him in some executive position and let him do the job. What they used to do with me as I was controversial.

Obama needs to appoint some big brainy guys and he has the authority to do that. As he only has two years to go and this is a crises he should go for it. At least bring Clark into the discussion.

He has total authority to just hire a bunch of smart guys. It does not have to rest on just one person he can get through congress.

I have played this game many times.
