I have my suspicion that some of the press releases around Web/Java
based management are simply PR fluff, and that there's a certain amount of "me too-ism" around a trendy new technology.

On the other hand, there are some real benefits of using Java/HTTP, which I don't deny: you write the application once, and it runs on any Java virtual machine - no more writing a version for Windows, for the Mac, and for the various flavors of Unix. At the same time as interacting with a network device, you could be pulling HTML help pages from your hard disk, or from the vendor's web site.

The fact is that there is a market for GUI-based management tools, and a market for command line interfaces. The less experienced network managers will naturally use the GUI; the rocket scientists and professional installers will go for the command line every time.
