TWO media groups bowed to pressure from the European Commission yesterday by agreeing to halt sales of television set - top decoder boxes, which can be used for multiple channels and interactive television, until Brussels completes an investigation into the development of German digital television.

German companies Kirch and Bertelsmann faced fines if they continued to sell the boxes, needed to decode digital TV signals, before the commission completes its inquiry. The commission aims to determine whether the duo use the boxes to exclude competition from the broadcasting market. -
