A more accurate way to state this is that the Civil Rights Act passed despite the opposition of the Dixiecrats. Robert Byrd and those other Democrats were all from the South. Because LBJ, a Democrat, signed th legislation, southern Democrats started to sour on the party. Nixon picked up on that and crafted his Southern Strategy and made the Republican party more appealing to the racists in the Democratic party. So the Dixiecrats started to move to the Republican party. The ones who remained with the Democratic party renounced their racist past, like Byrd.

The Republican party actively courted the racists and the evangelicals starting in the 1970s. That accelerated post-Watergate. There was a lot of overlap between the southern racists and the evangelicals, it must have seemed a natural thing to do. To do that, y'all purged your party of people like Everett Dirksen, the cloth coat Republicans.

Starting with Reagan, the Republican party openly embraced the evangelicals. Now it looks as if they are openly embracing the racists. The blowback from that will be interesting to watch.

i am a life-long Texan. I lived through this. Peddle your revisionist history somewhere else. Y'all bought the racist. Now y'all have them. Returns are not accepted.
