I think it is still a prejudicial problem. It is operating on a subconscious level, though. The person in question may legitimately view themselves as not being prejudiced against a group, but there are, subconsciously. Likely taught to them by parents or peers who very well may have been unaware of it themselves.

I agree its a prejudicial problem but I also think white people see black men and even some women as dangerous when they are not. The cues are different than with white people so white people don't seem to be able to read them very well.

When I was doing my student teaching there were two black guys in my class........they were big guys and played basketball. My first instinct when I met them is that they might be a problem because of their swagger and attitude. However, the girlfriend of one of the guys took a liking to me and whatever attitude they had towards me dropped. They were like very different people.........both really sweet guys and the two of them were funny as hell when they were together. Interestingly enough, one of them is now in junior college and last year the basketball team did a workout at my gym and he came up and started talking to me. We talked for nearly an hour. At that time, I remembered my initial fear of him and realized how stupid it was.

I think out of their own fear, black men posture in such a way that makes white people very uncomfortable. It plays into all white racial fears that blacks are by their very nature dangerous. I think its what keeps us a part. Just a theory.
